Partner in a large private practice

Ian - Trade mark attorney, partner in a large private practice

Ian is a partner in a large trade mark and patent attorney practice based in Nottingham. He has been practising as a trade mark attorney for 23 years and is a former president of ITMA.

Ian read biochemistry at Edinburgh University and pharmacology at Hatfield Polytechnic. Prior to becoming a trade mark attorney he worked in research and development for an international pharmaceutical and healthcare company for 10 years. Whilst there, a vacancy for a patent and trade mark attorney arose and he was offered the job. He then went on to become manager of their trade marks department.

After a spell in private practice in Scotland, Ian joined Eric Potter Clarkson in 1991 and became a partner in 1992. He joined the Board of Management in 2000.

As a trade mark attorney Ian spends his time searching trade marks, filing and registering them, undertaking enforcement procedures, licensing trademarks and advising clients. He enjoys the diversity the role brings, especially meeting different people. Every day is different as the role constantly varies. The job can be stressful at times, however, and this is usually when deadlines need to be met for a client or when there is just too much to get through.

Ian is nearing the end of his career and is hoping to retire shortly. He has had a long and varied career, being dual qualified as a patent and trade mark attorney. In 1995 he was elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Trade Mark Attorneys and served as its President from 2002-2004.
