Trade Mark Administrators' Course (formerly, the Formalities Course)
What's the background to the Trade Mark Administrators' Course?
The course, formerly known as the Formalities course, started in October 1997 and aimed to provide official recognition of the duties performed by support staff and trade mark administrators. We found that the initial intake of students was a collection of very able administrators who on average had at least 6 years' worth of experience. However, with the latest intake of students, the mixture varied from experienced administrators to those who had worked in the field for a short period of time. The course is designed to test knowledge and provide the necessary tools for any student, so that on completion of the course, they have a sound understanding of trade mark formalities and official procedures.
Are there any educational requirements for attending the Trade Mark Administrators' Course?
None are required. However, attendance at the lectures is required, except in the case of re-sits.
Do I need to be an ITMA Member in order to attend the Trade Mark Administrators' Course?
No, the Trade Mark Administrators' Course is open to anyone.
When does the Trade Mark Administrators' Course take place?
The course term is from January through to June of each year with lectures from 4.00 pm to 6.00 pm taking place fortnightly.
Where is the Trade Mark Administrators' Course held?
Traditionally, there is always a London based course.
If there is enough interest in a certain area, the Committee are happy to run out-of-town courses, however this is also dependent on assistance from a local ITMA member in that area.
Are there any additional trips on the Trade Mark Administrators' Course?
During the course there may be a visit to the Trade Marks Registry at the UK-IPO. This tour will be different from the UK-IPO's open days and is specially designed for the students on the ITMA Trade Mark Administrators' Course.
Is there an exam at the end of the Trade Mark Administrators' Course?
On completion of the lectures, an examination is set on the course content only and lasts for 3 hours. There is a multiple-choice section and a written answer section. Both are compulsory. The pass mark is 60%.
Can I re-sit the Trade Mark Administrators' exam if I fail?
In the event of a candidate having been unsuccessful, a place on the current years' course cannot be guaranteed as priority is given to those who have not previously taken the course. Unsuccessful candidates can however, receive copies of the current year's course content on payment of a fee and sit the exam the following year (they are not permitted to attend lectures). This option is only available to candidates who have previously taken the course and sat the exam.
Can I become an Member if I pass the Trade Mark Administrators' Course?
All successful candidates will be eligible to apply for Associate Membership of ITMA providing they seek sponsorship from two Corporate Members of the Institute.
Please note that candidates who have passed the exam and who intend to further their career by sitting the trade mark exams would be more suited to Student Membership of the Institute.
How do I register for the Trade Mark Administrator's Course?
Course registration details are available from around early October every year. To receive registration details, email Jane at the ITMA office.
