Lancaster House – one of London’s finest town houses
Throughout the nineteenth century, Stafford House (as it was known then) was a hub of social and political life. As the family home to the Sutherlands, it attracted many distinguished political guests and artists, including factory reformer Lord Shaftesbury, anti-slavery author Harriet Beecher Stowe and Italian nationalist leader Giuseppe Garibaldi. Almost as influential as the visitors was the décor, which set the fashion for London reception rooms for nearly a century. The Louis XIV interiors created a stunning backdrop for the Sutherlands’ impressive collection of paintings and objets d’art, many of which can still be seen in the house today.
Dominating the whole of the east side of the house, the Long Gallery provides a dramatic backdrop for major events. In June 1953, Winston Churchill gave a coronation banquet for the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II in the Long Gallery. More recently, it has been used for a number of top-level international talks – including the 1979 Zimbabwe Conference, the 1996 Bosnia Peace Implementation Conference, the 1997 Nazi Gold Conference and the 1998 Northern Ireland Peace Talks.
