Lane & Partners is unusual amongst legal firms in having established its own trade mark agency at the time of its inception in the mid-1970's. This conducts work in the British Registry and the European Office (OHIM) at Alicante with full accreditation. The IP unit also advises on the licensing, merchandising and franchising of trademarks, copyrights, designs and other rights, and conducts related litigation.

Michael Varvill was a founding member of the firm and has been a partner since 1981. His main areas of practice are intellectual property, marketing, trade regulation and competition law, and related litigation. He is a registered trade mark attorney and is accredited to practise in OHIM, the European registry.
