The practice was founded in 1887 by George Croydon Marks who formed the partnership with Dugald Clerk the following year. Clerk is renowned as the inventor of the two-stroke gas engine and was a pioneering automobile engineer. Marks was one of the leading politicians and designers of his generation. As early as 1911, a leading British newspaper referred to Marks & Clerk as "recognised as the greatest firm of its kind in the world".
